Terry and Surf Eleki

If you don't know who these clowns are, you probably know some SHIT about music, although clearly not very much.

I'm a bit of a surf head. It kind of bugs me when people always look at me quizzically when they grab one of my earphones and sample what I'm listening to. It's usually The Ventures, Sr. Bikini, or these guys. It bugs me even more when surf heads look at me quizzically when they grab one of my earphones and sample these guys, Takeshi Terauchi & Bunnys.

Before the Ventures did a tour in Japan, not a lot of people had heard of them. After they returned home, The Ventures were a goddamn household name in Glorious Nippon. Before long, electric guitar enthusiast Takeshi Terauchi 'affectionately' known as Terry, began performing covers some classic Ventures songs (very common even in popular surf groups, every garage band in the 60's and 70's played The Ventures).

They quickly moved on to Surf infused with classical jap folk songs (that I had never heard of before discovering Terry..). The product is fucking magical.

See what I mean?

They're the Dark Horse of Surf Music. While Dick Dale is probably more or less as influential to guitars as Jimi Hendrix, these guys were just as influential, unfortunately only in ways that generation y westerners like ourselves never really felt.

Here's one more song. Feel the familiarity?
